Do you know what palm oil is and what it's used for?
Palm oil (INCI: Sodium palmate, sodium palm kernalate) is an ingredient widely used in cosmetics (as well as in the food industry) due to its properties. It is one of the main ingredients in soap making, as it produces a creamy, stable lather and gives firmness to the solid bar. It is also used for its emollient properties.
It is obtained from the fleshy part or fruit of Elaeis guineensis , which is a palm tree that grows a lot in places with a temperate tropical climate, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Latin American countries such as Colombia .
But...what is RSPO?
Palm oil is the second most widely produced type of oil after soybean. Its high demand has led to its massive cultivation, often without regard for environmental and social conditions.
For example, large areas of jungle with endangered animals were deforested for farming, employees were hired in poor conditions, and cultural aspects of these areas were ignored, generating strong negative impacts at various levels.
Following this, the RSPO was established in 2005 , a non-profit foundation that brings together stakeholders in the palm oil industry and non-governmental organizations to improve the industry's approach to palm oil production in the context of workers, local communities, and the environment.
RSPO Certification
The RSPO developed a set of standards that palm oil producers must follow to ensure sustainable and responsible production . These standards, known as the RSPO Principles and Criteria , establish the standards by which companies can claim that their palm oil production processes are sustainable, taking into account environmental and social aspects.
